Numeric Rating System

(5) = Best; (4) = Better; (3) = Good; (2) = Fair; (1) = OK

These abstracts serve as reminders to myself; they serve to "jog" my memory on what a book was all about. That's all. This is not a literary critique, not a social commentary, and certainly nothing profound to warrant further discussion.

(5) = means that I really enjoyed this book; (1) = means I finished reading it but wonder if my time could have been better spent elsewhere.

Rigging Period Ship Models by Lennarth Petersson

Filed under: — Yee Gan @ 6:56 am

This is the first time I have included a technical abstract of a book I read. I wrote a Review for a ship modeler’s web page (DryDock Forum) and got some responses that were positive, so I decided to copy parts of what I wrote and paste them here!

Printed in the year 2000. A Step-By-Step Guide to the Intricacies of the Square Rig. This is an excellent 119 page, albeit expensive hardback book filled with large, detailed, three dimensional drawings on glossy paper showing how a specific English frigate, the Melampus, a 36-gun, 18-pounder frigate was rigged. The ship was launched in 1785 and was one of the biggest frigates of her day.

Under The Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes

Filed under: — Yee Gan @ 5:59 am

This is written by an American professor who buys a “summer” home in Italy. The following exerpt is in the jacket and summarizes it very well.

In an account of her love affair with Italy and the home that changed her life, poet, gourmet cook, and travel writer Frances Mayes opens the door on a wondrous new world when she buys and restores an abandoned villa in the spectacular Tuscan countryside. She finds faded frescoes beneath the whitewash in the dining room, a wineyard under wildly overgrown brambles - and even a wayward scorpion under her pillow. She shares many recipes she had discovered in Italy. She explores the Italian landscape, history and cuisine, with each advanture yielding delightful surprises. The memoir takes you into the heart of Italy and tells of a renewal not only of a house, but also of the spirit. (3)
