Another outlandish, imaginary, fantastic science fiction adventure by Cussler. The hero is Kurt Austin. A research project to alter the genes of human beings who will enable them to live forever resulted in mutants who have turned into monstrous, animal-like primitive jurassic beasts who were then imprisoned and abused by their care takers; the creatures attack and eat their human victims.
The research for this drug continues with kidnapped scientists and a team from NUMA has been captured and forced into “slavery” as research scientists in pursuit of this drug. We learn the drug has been a partial success and we see their results in the transformation of the evil witch who was changed from an ugly old crone into a beautiful, perfect #10 beauty of a blond who looked like she was in her early 30s. She boasts that she is over 100 years old. Of course, the scientist who developed the drug had also been mistreated over the years, and in revenge designs the last vial of drug to speed up the aging process without telling the evil witch. She has taken two vials and assumes the last one will give her immortality.
The tale is way too complicated to summarize. Needless to say the NUMA team manages to free the mutants who in turn kill and eat their jailors.
There is a subplot. It has to do with a mutant weed this same evil family developed which will grow so fast it will destroy the earth’s oceans as we know them. They want to control planet earth as living immortals. All sealife will be destroyed and all ocean lanes will be closed by this weed. Of course the NUMA team manages to destroy the weed with a simple bacteria discovered in the laboratories on the mutant’s island. A fun far fetched story. My rating: #3.
