Numeric Rating System

(5) = Best; (4) = Better; (3) = Good; (2) = Fair; (1) = OK

These abstracts serve as reminders to myself; they serve to "jog" my memory on what a book was all about. That's all. This is not a literary critique, not a social commentary, and certainly nothing profound to warrant further discussion.

(5) = means that I really enjoyed this book; (1) = means I finished reading it but wonder if my time could have been better spent elsewhere.

Poison Study by Maria Snyder

Filed under: — Yee Gan @ 10:07 am

A wonderful fantasy, historical fiction in a magical world. The heroine is first, a slave. She is trained to taste poison in food, so she can be the food taster for the King. She tastes every morsel before the king touches the food. So the adventure begins. With the passing of time, she is befriended by experts in the King’s court who are skilled fighters: they teach her how to use their weapons and how to fight. These skills are valuable as she goes from one adventure to another… Excuse the generalities here. Don’t have time to capture all the names and detail here. (4)

An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore

An excellent book that has been made into a movie. No wonder he won an academy award for this. His detractors cannot ignore the mountain of data reflected in this book.

The Forgery of Venus by Michael Gruber

From the back jacket of the book: Chaz Wilmot has a gift for painting in the style of the old masters. He refuses to compromise his art and be commercial, but there are bills to pay. A lucrative offer to restore a fescoed ceiling turns out to be more than just “restoration,” but Chaz does it beautifully and no one can tell its not a real Tiepolo from the 18th century. But something else is happening to Chaz – he’s remembering things that never happened which take place in another time altogether. Is he losing his mind - or finding his art? A fascinating book which delves into the Artist’s mind and soul. (4)
